The fire originally grew from a small brush fire into one that engulfed a section of Interstate 15 in Cajon Pass. Multiple cars could be seen burning. Chilling pictures from the scene showed people wandering on the shoulder of the freeway, which was turned into a parking lot near state Route 138, as fire skipped from vehicle to vehicle and even to a big rig and car-hauling truck.
“Currently we have not only a multi-casaulty incident, but a large wildfire threatening structures”, Josh Wilkins with the county Fire Department aid.
Several homes reportedly were burning in the Baldy Mesa area.
It was at 500 acres about 3:45 p.m., and firefighting aircraft were temporarily grounded due to drone activity, the San Bernardino County Fire Department stated on Twitter. It swept across the 15 Freeway and burned several vehicles that were trapped on the freeway.
Evacuees were directed to a evacuation center at Serrano High School, 9292 Sheep Creek Road in Phelan.
Some areas were evacuated in the Cajon Pass area along Interstate 15 about 55 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
Nevada Highway Patrol says travelers planning to drive from Las Vegas to Southern California on Friday night through a mountain pass north of San Bernardino should wait.
