So, when Guardians of the Galaxy was unveiled to be part of Marvel’s “Phase 2″ of films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was a resounding..”Huh?”…from fans. Why? Well, because the comic series was very much a cult hit, not one of the big sellers at Marvel. Yet, they brought it to film, and through the brilliance of James Gunn, now the whole world knows about Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot.
Because of the success of the film, all the characters have had, or currently have, solo comic series. Some have even been likened to the film in how they depict the characters. Furthermore, the team book has had not only a boost in fans and sales, but several interesting roster changes to show the prominence of the team now. Though, with the upcoming sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the book has gone back to the classic lineup.
Some though, wonder if the movies will follow the books in that we could solo films of the GOTG characters. For Vin Diesel, who voice Groot, he thinks this is an inevitability:
“It’s something that James Gunn has talked about and it’s something that I know he would love to do,” said Diesel. “Sure, I think it could be very interesting. I think it’s inevitable. I think — you know, that character is so enigmatic and he was already one of the most unique characters in the Marvel universe. And I think what Marvel has done, primarily what James Gunn has done, has started to realize that character and he’s exceeded beyond expectations.”
Diesel also notes it’d be cool to go to Groot’s home planet and find out how the character came to be. The question though, is whether Marvel would dedicate itself to a character that only says a few words. More likely, just like the comics, we could see a Rocket/Groot film, as that would be a little more believable, and it’d give us a translator via Rocket.
What do you think? Should Groot get his own film? Let us know in the comments below!
