LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Thousands of Long Beach residents remain without power and stoplights around downtown are still dark, as crews work around the clock to restore electricity to a large swath of the city following fires in three electrical vaults.

Community members were also asked to put spoiled food and other trash out tomorrow so public works personnel can collect the trash. “We can talk. We haven’t been doing that for awhile now, so it’s good”, said Jennifer Sanchez, of Long Beach.

There are 110 non-operational traffic signals and six generators providing power to the area’s main corridors, Maloyan added.

Spokesman Paul Grigaux says utility workers hope to have the juice mostly restored overnight but some customers could be without electricity well into Friday.

“That is still 200 customers too many”, said Grigaux.

“Generally speaking, it’s one of the most reliable networks in the country”, he said of the system that failed.

The fires were reported about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, and initially cut power to around 4,800 customers, Edison said. “Unfortunately troubleshooting exercise and restoration tasks are complicated”.

Bringing the system all the way back up is the real problem now, Grigaux said, because it requires section-by-section testing.

Some nearby residents briefly were evacuated, Heflin said.

Fire officials stated that unattended candles were the cause of Thursday’s early morning apartment fire that left two critically injured.

On July 17, SCE said about 1,000 customers were still affected by the power outages.
