Let’s hope the academy avoids that by extending its spirit for recognizing new blood to the winners circle.
The 67th Emmy Award nominations were announced in Los Angeles on Thursday, where “Game of Thrones” came out on top. HBO received two nominations in the comedy category, for Silicon Valley and Veep, and amassed a record total of 126 across all categories.
Chuck Hodes/FOX Taraji P. Henson (right with “Empire” co-star Terrence Howard) was nominated for best actress, but her Fox show was largely snubbed. Ditto the show’s nomination for Best Drama Series over “The Americans“.
Washington didn’t win, but her presence on Scandal and its success lead to some significant change. Davis and Henson will be the favorites going into the race this year, though.
The comedy-drama series, which aired its first season past year to rave reviews, features Jeffrey Tambor as transgender woman Maura, who comes out to her children and transitions later in life. There’s no good reason Constance Wu of “Fresh Off the Boat” isn’t nominated, for example. “Like if I was a leaf, I would have blown right off the stage”.
“Better Call Saul” star Jonathan Banks started his Emmy nomination morning like he does most other days: On the golf course.
“This was truly a remarkable year in television”, said Bruce Rosenblum, Television Academy Chairman and CEO.
But there were glaring omissions as well – including a shut-out in major awards for “Empire“, a breakout hit that makes a black family the rare focus of a TV drama, other than Henson’s bid.
Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood in House of Cards. The annual show, a chance for the TV industry to highlight its top fare, drew 15.6 million viewers past year on NBC. But the series received a disappointing three nominations and was not included in the outstanding drama category. He is zero for eight so far, though. Showtime, PBS and FX also landed on the list.
He quipped: “So honoured to be nominated for an Emmy”.
Mitch Haaseth/ABC Viola Davis is one of the few network stars to be in the mix, earning a best actress nod for ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder“.
No “Empire“: The Fox megahit wasn’t one of seven nominees as best drama, which illustrates how hard it is for broadcast network series to get their due.
Modern Family is now tied with Frasier with five comedy series wins. Surprisingly, however, Schmidt’s Ellie Kemper was overlooked for comedy actress. “It’s totally mad to me that anyone cares if I get a nomination – it’s pretty wild”. Yes, says Modern Family co-executive producer Christopher Lloyd, who believes it’s important that the show remain at a high level.
The Television Academy also snubbed the popular young-adult romantic comedy Jane the Virgin. “It gives us great pride to become broadcasting partners with the Primetime Emmy® Awards once again“, said Star India’s official spokesperson.
Notable omissions include Jim Parsons from The Big Bang Theory who has won four times for best actor in a comedy and is the best paid actor on USA television.
Emmy voters may soon get an eyeful of Donnie’s tighty whities, thanks to Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany. It’s truly an ensemble, so why isn’t that recognized?
