With just about 12 hours left at the time of writing, we’ll have to wait and see just how high it goes, but this will certainly be a tough record to beat for future games on Kickstarter.
What are your thoughts on the success of Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter?
The original funding goal for the game was $2 million, and while the campaign has proven successful, questions have arisen as to whether such an ambitious game could be made on such a relatively small budget.
First revealed as a surprise announcement at Sony’s E3 keynote, Shenmue 3’s crowdfunding campaign got off to a quick start, raising more million in less than nine hours.
Unless you are a Kickstarter backer of Shenmue III who shelled out at least $60 in support of the project, you aren’t guaranteed a physical copy of the game when it eventually is released. However, Shenmue 3 has now become the most funded video game on Kickstarter. Mighty No. 9, Broken Age, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and Perception are among the many games that were successfully funded through Kickstarter. Now on the final day of its campaign, Shenmue 3 has gone on to receive almost triple that original goal in funding and break a Kickstarter record in the process. Soon after, Shenmue’s creator Yu Suzuki appeared on stage to launch the game’s Kickstarter campaign. Overall, the new Shenmue 3 is 8th, behind The Veronica Mars Movie Project ($5,702,153), Ouya ($8,596,474), and Exploding Kittens ($8,782,571).
