Police officials gather during an investigation after a 12-year-old girl was found dead Friday, July 17, 2015, in West Valley City, Utah.

When her daughter didn’t come back, the mother became anxious and went looking for her. About 1:30 a.m., the girl’s mother ran into two West Valley police officers at a 7-Eleven, 4807 W. 3500 South, and told them the girl was missing.

Vainuku said the girl lived a half mile south of where her body was found. Police tape surrounded a different home just down the street from the girl’s house Friday afternoon, but Russo would not comment about the home or a potential search warrant being served there.

The girl was believed to have left her house willingly, but was not considered a runaway.

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) – Utah police are questioning a person of interest in the death of a missing 12-year-old girl whose body was found in an overgrown horse pasture.

West Valley Police Chief Lee Russo stressed that the person being interviewed may not be the suspect and declined to say whether it was an adult or juvenile, but referred to the person as a male. The girl’s cell phone helped police track where her body was located. She told two officers at a nearby convenience store that her daughter was missing at around 1:30 a.m.

Cops think the girl was killed at the scene where her body was found, where cops found a “depression” indicating a violent murder among shrubs, trees and grass some 3- to 4-feet tall.

“Evidence of trauma and indicators at scene suggest 12-year-old girl’s death is homicide”, it said. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
