Former surfing world champion Mick Fanning has survived a shark attack during a surfing event at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa.
Dramatic vision showed a shark thrashing in the water near Fanning during his heat against fellow Australian Julian Wilson. Competition has been suspended for the day though since there’s a freaking shark lurking in the waters underneath the surfers competing.
“I was just sitting there, I was just about to start moving and then I felt something grab… get stuck in my leg rope”.
Fanning described how he fought it off, telling Fox Sports “I punched him in the back”. I was just kicking and screaming.
Fanning, a three-time world champion, said he was able to “get a punch into its back” and startle it.

Sharks and surfers are not range bedfellows, but they’re not two entities that get along very well. “I’m sure something like this doesn’t ever leave your mind”.
As you’ll see here, Fanning was A-OK, with nary a scratch on him.
