Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter tells City News Service that Jason Davis died at a hospital Wednesday night. Eleven other people have been wounded. Barry Montgomery said. The caller reported a man with a knife inside the shop, Montgomery said.
Arriving officers were directed to Davis, who was seen sitting at a table in the patio area, armed with a knife, a Los Angeles police statement said. One of the employees at the shop then dialed 911. Officers said he failed to comply with commands to drop the weapon and a Taser did not have an effect, according to a police statement. The video showed a man lying on the ground, slowly waving his hands above his head before officers turned him over and handcuffed him. Neither the officers nor anyone in the coffee shop was injured.
The shooting is being investigated by the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division, the Office of the Inspector General and a shooting team from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division.
Police said a “large” box cutter was found at the scene.
