This is the moment an Egyptian navy vessel was targeted by militants affiliated with the Islamic State group, which said it destroyed the ship with a rocket while it was anchored off the Sinai peninsula’s Mediterranean coast.

The group, called Sinai Province, released images on Twitter which appear to show a rocket heading for a vessel and setting it on fire on impact.

The Egyptian military said in a statement that a coastguard launch had exchanged shots with “terrorist elements”, causing the vessel to catch fire.

In gun battles that raged all morning, at least 21 soldiers were killed, the army later having to order journalists not to report claims in local media of much higher death counts. Other witnesses in the territory said they had heard explosions and gunfire.

He did not specify the extent of the damage, but security officials said that a number of crew members suffered injuries during the attack, and several jumped overboard to escape.

Authorities were investigating the possibility that Thursday’s attack was the result of explosives attached to the ship then detonated remotely, as well as that it that it was hit with a rocket fired from the shore, according to security officials quoted by the Associated Press.
