Derek Bos with the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office tells The Denver Post (http://goo.gl/uAnzme ) that emergency crews were called to the Denny Creek trailhead Friday afternoon.
The Chaffee County Coroner is expected to release an official cause of Bartlett’s death after an autopsy.
A lightning strike another popular Colorado 14er – Mount Bierstadt – sent three people to the hospital last month.
“Initial reports indicated that two people were struck and injured; however, responders were later able to confirm that four persons were struck, with two of the victim’s being in critical condition”, Bos said. Two other injured hikers navigated to the base of the mountain independently, while a third was airlifted to the hospital in Colorado Springs. Two others suffered minor injuries.
It took responders several hours to reach the victims because of the rugged terrain.
The region where the hikers were struck, about 134 miles (215 kilometres) southwest of Denver, is a popular walking route and a common entry point to nearby Mount Yale.
