The Israeli military struck after it said four rockets were fired Thursday from Syrian territory, two landing in northern Israel and two others in the Israeli-held Golan Heights.
Israel also carried out over a dozen airstrikes against Syrian army positions near the Golan Heights late Thursday in response to the rocket attacks.
The Israeli army said it retaliated against rockets by an Iranian-backed Palestinian faction that hit an Israeli village, setting off fires but causing no casualties.
The jihadi group has denied responsibility for firing the rocket salvo, saying that accusations against them are meant to draw attention away from a Palestinian hunger-striker in Israeli prison, The Times of Israel reported.
Syrian state TV reported that the Israeli air raid overnight happened just before midnight in the southern region of Quneitra, killing a soldier and wounding seven.
According to the official news agency of Syria, SANA, the vehicle which was destroyed by the Israeli air force was a civilian vehicle carrying five Syrian nationals.
The rocket attacks Thursday landed in open areas of the Golan Heights and Upper Galilee.
“We have no intention to escalate the events, but our policy stands”, Mr. Netanyahu said.
“This is an Islamic Jihad cell directed by Iran”.
“Iran sponsored these attacks”.
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said his government was considering a US request for six Royal Australian Air Force jets based in Dubai to bomb Islamic State (Isis) targets in Syria.
“We will not accept efforts to violate Israel’s sovereignty and harm the security of its citizens”, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said in an emailed statement.
Israel consistently holds Syria responsible for any fire from its territory, intentional or otherwise, and directs retaliation at targets belonging to the Syrian army regardless of who was responsible. It has largely been observing a truce with Israel following a 2014 war in the Palestinian enclave. Rockets have occasionally been fired during fighting in the war-torn country and ended up in Israel in the past.
Later, an army spokesman blamed the attack on Iran, the main ally of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria.
The attack Israel is pinning on the Islamic Jihad movement “with Iranian funding and direction”, occurred Thursday.
