Police say 32-year-old Gary Grodin allegedly repeatedly bound and sexually assaulted his girlfriend’s 10-year-old daughter in Swansea between April and June.
Swansea Police Chief, Steve Johnson said, “Binding the hands of this 10-year-old victim while forcing sexual acts the suspect captures on video these heinous crimes”.
Police officers said they captured former Bixby graduate Gary Grodin Thursday afternoon, almost a week after leaving Swansea, Illinois. Grodin sent to a friend about being in love with a 10-year-old girl that launched a police investigation.
Swansea officers said the acts Grodin is accused of came to light when messages he sent to a friend on Facebook were forwarded to police. The suspect also goes by the name Mikel Grodin. He said it’s filled with children and, while he doesn’t know the suspect, he’s happy someone accused of sexual assault against a child is behind bars.
“It is not believed the mother of the victim knew of these criminal acts”.
Police immediately responded to the home to make sure the girl and her siblings were safe. Family members and the victim were interviewed by detectives with the Swansea Police Department.
United States Marshals Service have arrested a man wanted for 31 felony counts with a $1 million bond. St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly says the suspect may be a threat to others.
A cell phone left at the home by Grobin was acquired by authorities through a search warrant and they discovered videos and photos which are being held as evidence.
Swansea authorities are working with Oklahoma authorities to return Grodin to Illinois.
Anyone with information on Grodin’s whereabouts is asked to contact CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
