DETROIT A Detroit woman convicted of killing her two children, whose bodies were discovered in a freezer during an eviction, was sentenced on Friday to life in prison without parole.

Mitchelle Blair, 36, pleaded guilty to two counts of murder last month in the deaths of Stephen Berry, 9, and Stoni Blair, 13 – calling them “demons”- and faces mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In 2012, Mitchelle Blair murdered her 9-year-old son Stephen Berry, and in 2013, she did the same to her 13-year-old daughter, Stoni Blair. Defense attorney Wyatt Harris said Blair was abused as a child, had little education and then had her own children.

She waived her right to a competency hearing and preliminary examination earlier in June and said she wanted to plead guilty to protect her surviving son.

“If I had a chance to do it again, I would”, Blair said about killing her children.

Blair said that she would have accepted being sentenced to the death penalty herself, but Michigan does not have capital punishment, according toClick On Detroit. Blair claimed the two had sexually abused one of their siblings, though she admitted to not having witnessed the alleged assaults, nor did she ever file a police report.

Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Carin Goldfarb said during Friday’s hearing there was no evidence of that.

Blair, who remained stone-faced, responded: “I did”. “And in that respect, you failed in the worst possible way….”

Blair said she later suffocated Stoni with a plastic bag, poured scalding hot water on her and struck her head repeatedly.

“I do pray that your remaining children will recover from what they saw and endured in that household”, the judge said.

‘As horrendous as everybody thinks I am – that’s fine, ‘ Blair told Hathaway. Two surviving kids, ages 17 and 8, have been placed with an aunt.

They are each trying to win back custody of their children – whom Blair had been taking care of – in court.
