Officials with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office have the bomb squad, FBI, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on scene at two churches in Las Cruces.
Shortly after 8 a.m., Las Cruces Police were dispatched to Calvary Baptist Church, at 1800 Locust St., where it was learned a mailbox had been damaged by an explosive device.
Parishioners at Holy Cross tell ABC-7 that the 8 o’clock mass was just getting started when the explosion in the trash bin went off, shattering the stained glass windows. The churches remained closed Sunday afternoon while multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the nearly-simultaneous blasts, as mentioned by police.
While waiting in a staging area, Holy Cross Catholic Church Pastor… “Please pray for our community”, said a statement from the church.
Las Cruces police spokesman Danny Trujillo says nobody was hurt in the two explosions, which occurred less than 30 minutes apart. Trujillo said police have advised other churches in the area “to be on the lookout for anything suspicious”.
