In a message mainly aimed at sceptical voices in the US Congress and strong resistance from Israel, European Union foreign ministers meeting In Brussels stressed that there was no better option available.

The Council reiterates that European Union actions and commitments under the JCPOA related to The lifting of the sanctions will be carried out in accordance with the timeline and modalities specified in The JCPOA; and that The lifting of economic and financial sanctions would come into effect once the global Atomic Energy Agency has verified that Iran has implemented its nuclear-related commitments as stipulated in the JCPOA, said The Foreign Affairs Council conclusions.
“The idea of an international support group is one that we will explore in coming weeks”.
She said a new regional and global framework is necessary to foster a more positive environment.
Mogherini, a former Italian foreign minister, said the torturous but ultimately successful Iran talks showed that even the toughest problems could be resolved through diplomacy.
Mogherini rejected suggestions that the proposal could undercut other peace efforts including that of the Middle East Quartet of the UN, Russia, the United States and the EU.
“Iran is back in the global community”, said Jean Asselborn, Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister whose country holds the rotating six-month European Union presidency.
“The establishment of an International support group is a possible way to contribute to this end”, it said. They said there “is no alternative to a negotiated two-state solution”.
