This is rare territory for the British Open, not to mention the other majors.

He was the 54-hole leader at last month’s US Open at Chambers Bay, but faded to a tie for ninth with his health issues surely hampering him.

So much so, that on the green, Spieth leant to his left in an attempt to coax Garcia’s putt into the hole.

Harrington, more or less the godfather of the younger generation of Irish players, was as proud of Dunne’s performance as his own. He plans to turn professional later this summer and try to claim a spot on the European Tour. “Tomorrow, it’s just a matter of playing to my strengths”. There hasn’t been an amateur victor of the Open since Bobby Jones in 1930.

The conditions have frustrated some of the leading contenders in the tournament with Masters and US Open victor Jordan Spieth swiping his club in the air after missing a putt that seemed to be held up in the wind.

Such an opportunity might not come around again for Spieth. However, his one three-putt at No. 9 served as an important catalyst.

That must’ve fired him up. “I think obviously everyone within three, four shots has got a really good chance of winning, and it’s all about composure now and tomorrow really your thought process on how you’re going to handle the pressure”. He’s now at 10 under for the tournament.

McDowell was another stroke back thanks to a birdie on the 11th, with playing partners Graeme De Laet and Jim Furyk also four under after 11 holes. It didn’t get any better on the back side, where his lone birdie at the 15th was wiped out by bogeys on the final three holes.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) – Irmo native Dustin Johnson began the third round as the British Open leader. Half of them were major champions, and there was yet another amateur among them – 21-year-old Jordan Niebrugge of Oklahoma State. He made three straight birdies.

Dunne said he’d worry about the weather when he got to the course for the final round.

Spraying shots and struggling with the putter, he muddled through the front nine with a 37 – the worst score posted by anyone in the final 17 twosomes. It still got him with two shots of the lead.

Spieth is bidding to become the first player since fellow American Ben Hogan in 1953 to win the first three majors of the year. It’s the British Open.

The 2014 runner-up steadily accumulated birdies to sign for a 66 and move to within three shots of Johnson on a congested leaderboard in which 25 players were within three of the lead midway through the afternoon.

“He made me so nervous on my second shot because I was going a completely different route, low, running, and I tugged it a little bit to the left”. Jim Furyk and Rickie Fowler both shot 66.

The Masters and US Open victor p ulled his drive on the 18th near the grandstands on the right-hand side of the first fairway a nd had to back off his second shot due to noise from spectators taking pictures. Amateur Ashley Chesters also shot 67. Eddie Pepperell is 8 under through 16 holes and tied with Johnson’s 10-under score after 36 holes.

In the end, he had to settle for an 8-under 64 in the third round of the British Open. But he stayed in the game by driving the 18th green for a birdie.
