The gesture was particularly touching because Ottun’s supporters had been asking Drake to notice him on social media.

Jamal drowned while swimming in Shawnigan Lake, in Vancouver Island on Sunday, while he was on tour with his school’s rugby team.

In the week that followed his death friends and family have taken to social media to celebrate the popular schoolboy’s life, starting with Facebook group “In memory of Jamal” and later the Twitter campaign.

“Heard this young man was a big fan”, Drake captioned a photo of Ottun.

With celebrities such as actor Tyger Drew-Honey giving their support, the hashtag soon started to trend in the UK.

Drake has used his Instagram account for many things. “Watch over me from way up above!”

Jamal was a year 12 pupil at Wellington County Grammar School in Surrey.

He is survived by his mother Lolade, father Dapo and sisters Zainad and Rahmat.

She told the Standard: “He was a wonderful, caring boy with such a bright future ahead of him”.
