MLS has been adamant that it will not grant Beckham’s group an expansion license without a soccer-specific stadium in downtown Miami.
Beckham and the MLS want the new team, which is as yet unnamed, to take to the field for the start of the 2018 season.
David Beckham’s business partners will meet with the mayor of Miami to discuss their ongoing efforts to build a stadium for an MLS team, one of Beckham’s associates confirmed to the Miami Herald.
The site is the former location of the Orange Bowl, which was used by the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami’s college football team.
The passing a stadium proposal in Miami is hard after the city’s decision to provide $500 million in public funding to build Marlins Park for the city’s Major League Baseball franchise.
In a statement, Beckham United said a video conference held with Regalado on Friday “was another positive step toward bringing a world-class soccer club to Miami”.
Beckham’s partner, Sprint Corp. “[The ownership group] is thrilled by the initial outpouring of support we’ve received from our fans and we’re excited about sharing our plans with the City, County and community soon”.
“We have presented him our intentions to bring Futbowl and a new soccer stadium (to) the former Orange Bowl”.
Claure said his architects have studied the area and decided there is no need to alter roadways near the planned stadium site.
“This is a milestone”, he said at the news conference.
Located between downtown and the Miami global Airport, the site is the “preferred location” for the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid star’s investment group, a spokesman for Beckham told EFE Friday.
