Van Persie spent eight years at Arsenal after being signed from Feyenoord in 2004 and became one of the Premier League’s deadliest hit men, being crowned double Footballer of the Year in 2012 in his final season at Arsenal. Van Persie visibly lifted whenever he heard it and the crowd’s affections appeared meaningful to him. Many even expected Van Persie to be made captain at Old Trafford.
His transfer fee is reportedly 4.7 million euros, although this has yet to be officially disclosed. The height of his season was probably the last minute equaliser at home to Chelsea, but there was a nagging feeling throughout the campaign that Van Persie was thinking of a move away. A weak squad, which relied on Tom Cleverley, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, looked flimsy under Moyes and Van Persie had little to no service during the season.
Heading further back the field, and Southampton need to replenish their midfield after selling Morgan Schneiderlein to Manchester United.
However, Van Persie’s role gradually diminished under first David Moyes and then his old Holland manager Louis van Gaal as a series of niggling injuries hampered him. The Dutch had performed well under Van Gaal at the World Cup in Brazil, finishing third.
The ESPN FC panel debate whether or not Manchester United’s latest signing will return the club to their former glory and win them the Premier League title. Kuyt said that this place is a big club and talked about the fans here.
He said he is convinced he can continue to play at the top-level for “many years”.
“We spoke with other clubs but this club gave me the best feeling and I am very happy that we are here now”, he said.
The fans thronged in large numbers and cheered for Van Persie, where he arrived at the party by playing keep-uppies with his son, Shaqueel.
United are looking to replace Van Persie with a new centre forward over the remaining weeks of the transfer window, and have been linked with the likes of Edinson Cavani from Paris Saint Germain, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke.
