A Muslim celebration with many rituals and traditions that marks the end of Ramadan. Internationally, the moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia on Thursday and the kingdom’s Supreme Court announced that Eid al Fitr will fall on Friday, as reported by newspaper Al Arabiya.

“During this year’s White House Iftar, I had the opportunity to meet inspiring young Muslim Americans who are leading efforts for greater understanding and unity across diverse communities”, he said of the dinner that breaks the daily Ramadan fast.

He emphasised the importance of the Zakatul Fitir, which, as reported by him, all Muslims are obliged to pay on behalf of themselves and members of their families.

President Buhari said in his Eid-el-Fitr message, that sacrificesare needed to accelerate the pace of national development.

After paying Zakat al-Fitr, adult Muslims offer the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer, which is followed by the sermon (known as Khutbah) to which everybody must listen.

He urged Nigerians, especially Muslims, to use the Sallah period to pray for Nigeria to overcome the multifaceted challenges facing the country.

Eminent businessman and former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Kalu, has congratulated the Muslim community in Nigeria on the successful completion of the compulsory 30-day Ramadan fasting. The markets and malls in the capital are busy with vendors selling traditional foods and delicacies and customers buying new outfits for the celebrations.

For the past month, a few 1.5 billion devotees have fasted from dawn to sunset every day, marking the month in which they believe the Quran was sent down to the lowest heaven, where it was prepared for Gabriel to later reveal to the Islamic Prophet Muhammed. Eid al-Fitr prayer marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

About 30,000 people packed the Lakemba mosque and spilled out into the street in Sydney’s south-west, at one of the country’s largest Eid celebrations. Gifts are also exchanged, with clothes the most popular presents. Hundreds of burqa-clad women, children in tow, hop from one shop to another hunting for fineries to be worn on the day of Eid.

On the day of Eid, Muslims gather at mosques in the morning to perform the Eid prayer, before holding family gatherings and visiting friends.

This year’s calculations coincide with the sighting of the moon with naked eyes in many Muslim countries.
