Ivo Karlovic marched into the semi-finals of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport with a straight-sets win over Dustin Brown.

The 36-year-old Czech qualifier, who saved a match point defeating Alejandro Falla, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (6), 7-6 (7) in the round of 16, beat Sock in their lone prior meeting in the 2013 Newport round of 16.

The 24th-ranked Karlovic lost to Lleyton Hewitt past year at Newport.

At an age when many of his contemporaries have moved on, Karlovic is producing one of the best seasons of his career.

The 6-foot-11 Croat, who leads the ATP with 846 aces on the season, was almost untouchable on serve in the second set. He said his elbow has been sore since the French Open. “These courts help what I do well”. He seems very comfortable on the surface. But I did everything else pretty well. He also knocked off fifth-seeded Adrian Mannarino of France in the quarterfinals Thursday. The giant Croatian prevailed in two sets with the final score of 7-6 6-3 in just over a hour of play.

The 27-year-old Querrey, ranked 36th in the world, double faulted the first three points of the match and lost the initial four games. The two players traded breaks early in the second before he forced the tiebreaker by closing out the 12th game at love with an ace. Up 4-3, Ram broke with a forehand passing shot just inside the sideline.

“I felt like I wasn’t winning big points”. He won when his American opponent hit a backhand return long.

“I served 40-something percent in the first set and that’s not great”.

“This is a match that if you put seven first serves in, the match can be over”, Brown said.
