British Columbians travelling south to Washington state may face major traffic delays after a serious multi-vehicle crash shut down I-5 near Mount Vernon, Washington on Saturday morning.

Authorities say the truck was hauling a mixture of clay and gravel and traveling southbound when it broke through a cable barrier in the median into the northbound lanes.

According to Washington State Trooper Mark Francis, eight people were injured in the pile-up, including two people who sustained critical injuries.

By midday, the backup had stretched miles in both directions.

Troopers were called to the area near the College Way exit 227, where they found the driver and front-seat passenger dead inside a vehicle just after 3 a.m.
